Back to the books

In the past few days I've launched myself back into literature after a brief (but not all that brief) hiatus. Here are a few excerpts I think are beautiful enough to stop and read again.
'It is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men' - F Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

'I could hear my heart beating. I could hear everyone's heart. I could hear the human noise we sat there making, not one of us moving, not even when the room went dark' - Raymond Carver, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love

'Be on the watch. There are ways out. There is a light somewhere. It may not be much light but it beats the darkness. Be on the watch. The gods will offer you chances. Know them. Take them.' - Bukowski, The Laughing Heart
